In the face of rejection

There is no greater feeling than looking at a bunch of adults fight over you. On the surface, that is what it seems like. They smile, chuckle before getting back to you with an encouraging, “You shall hear from us”. This is what every job seeker craves. There is that detail in an interviewer’s voice or body language that you always look out for to know if there is hope. When they are laughing with you, this means acceptance. You instantly know that you are their guy, the answer to the company’s problems. As you head out after a bomb interview, you start to pity those who are in the queue after you. The overdressed, the over confident, the desperate ones. No chance! Pretenders just who could have been using their precious time hunting for something else. In your mind, you know that the interviewers could have even hugged you in there.
And then you wait for that call. Climate changes, cabinet changes, fuel prices drop, Muhammad Ali dies and the only thing that stays the same is that Sevo is still President. Even after all this, no call. Power outages won’t even stop you. You go to the ka shop near home and charge your phone but still no phone call. How? Weeks go by and still no communication. Frustration drives you to go to their offices and you are received warmly by someone you didn’t meet the last time you were there. Kaboom!!! The new employee is someone who got the job you were not suitable enough to occupy. Wow! You know you killed it back there. Thoughts begin to manifest in your head. Maybe it was a conspiracy. Your unemployment woes continue and you are not sure who to blame. Another opportunity lost and you simply cannot see light at the end of the tunnel. Dayum!
The face of rejection is supposed to look easy on the eye. When you are facing a potential rejection, you are made comfortable first, your optimism built and all your hopes looking likely. It is after this that your dreams seem crushed. No one shouts at you when showing you away. It is why these girls will tell you that, ”You are a nice guy but I don’t think we can work out.” Everyone wants to polarise rejection and make it look very simple. When you face rejection, smile at it. Give it the same treatment. Just simply brush it off and redirect your focus to something else. It works.
