Alright! It looks like movie makers saved the good movies for the last part of the year. Sicario falls in the good movies category albeit with a few shortfalls. The movie is good because of different reasons. First, the plot.
FBI agent Kate Macy (Blunt) is part of a kidnap raid that goes wrong; agents die, she gets wounded. After the raid, her boss recommends her to Matt Graver (Brolin). Graver is heading a taskforce in charge of capturing Manuel Diaz, the guy behind the explosions that wounded Kate and killed her colleagues.
She is thrilled to be on such an important assignment but after meeting Matt’s partner Alejandro (del Toro) and the events that follow their meeting, Kate realises her assignment is not as straightforward as she first thought. From a shootout near the Mexican border to dirty cops, there is plenty to keep you on the edge.
Then there is the fact that Blunt is in the same movie with Brolin and Del Toro, and she more than carries her weight. She captures an idealist being thrown into the real world just right, enough that you cannot help getting shocked along with her. After her role in Edge of Tomorrow last year, which was a shift from softer roles she has had in the past; The Devil Wears Prada, 10 Year Engagement, there was a general consensus among fans that she should take on grittier roles –Macy fits the bill.
Del Toro and Brolin bring that screen charisma that has earned them awards in the past. If you have watched Traffic, then you will agree that there is something about Del Toro that makes him fit in well with movies about cartels. As for Brolin, dude is on a roll given that this is the second movie, after Everest, which is a hit with audiences in the same season.
While it is not the kind of movie that will let you escape from reality, given its serious tone, the action keeps you on edge, enough to watch till the last second.
