2013 is turning out to be a good year for sequels. We have had A Good Day To to Die, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, The Hangover Part III, Star Trek into Darkness, Iron Man 3, Hatchet 3 and The Smurfs 2. You can look out for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Machete Kills, Insidious Chapter 2 and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters.
You will not have to wait for Despicable Me 2, which starts showing at Cinema Magic tonight.
In th e 2010 prequel, Despicable Me, a criminal mastermind uses a trio of orphan girls as pawns for a grand scheme. Later he finds their love is profoundly changing him for the better.
In the sequel the movie starts in a secret laboratory near the Arctic Circle where items have just been stolen using a giant magnet. The Anti-Villain League (AVL) become suspicious about this case as the lab contains a mutating chemical compound, PX-41, which could transform living things into indestructible killing machines.
The organisation decides to recruit Gru, as he is a former villain, and could help the AVL prevent the mutating chemical from getting into the wrong hands.
Movie rating site, Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus reads: “It may not be as inspired as its predecessor, but Despicable Me 2 offers plenty of eye-popping visual inventiveness and a number of big laughs.”
Michael Rechtshaffen of The Hollywood Reporter gave the film a positive review, saying, “While the new edition doesn’t quite catch that inspired spark, there’s still plenty to enjoy here courtesy of those zippy visuals and a pitch-perfect voice cast led by the innately animated Steve Carell.” The film’s score is by Heitor Pereira and Pharrell Williams.
