SOROTI: From childhood, Lazarus Eboku was deliberate on where he saw his future and when that time came, he morphed into Laz on the Beats, writes Suzan Nanjala.
How did the name Laz on the beats come about?
My real name is Lazarus Eboku. Growing up my family used to call me Laz, so with my love for music and making beats, I just merged the two.
What kind of music do you produce?
I produce dancehall, hip-hop, RnB, reggae and Gospel.
Why music?
Since childhood, I loved music and I joined the church choir to be able to sing. I told my dad that when I grow up I wanted to do music and now here I am.
What was your parents’ reaction when you joined the music industry?
At first, my mother was not happy about it but my dad was supportive; he has been since my childhood. He loved playing the piano and guitar and I remember when I was in Primary Three he bought me a piano.
Who is your inspiration?
I was inspired by my passion.
What are some of the songs you have produced?
I have produced “Adum Eongo”, “Edeke Ejeni”, “Beramu”, “Addicted” by JKainass, “Hustling” by Okas, “Somebody” by Sky Echoes, “Are You Sure” by 2GB and many more.
What lessons have you learnt in this lockdown period?
I have learnt that people should not depend on one thing for survival. Besides production, I have a piggery farm, so when Covid-19 hit the world I turned to taking care of my pigs.
What is your goal in the industry?
I want to have a better recording label where I can manage and sign artistes.
What are some of the challenges you face?
There are some people who come to me when they do not know how to sing well and this makes work difficult for me but I give them more time to practice.
What do you think makes you different from other producers?
Each song I produce has its own beats. I make sure that their sound is different from the previous ones and I do this to make sure the listeners do not get demoralised by the artiste.
Tell us about your family?
I come from a family of five; three brothers and one sister. My father is called John Ebiru, a retired Bishop of Baptist church. I was born in a Christian family and we all love music.
Tell us about your Education.
I attended Pioneer Primary School, St Stevens’ Secondary School for O-Level, Community Secondary School for my A-Level all in Soroti and I later joined Film and TV institute in Rubaga-Kampala.
What advice would you like to send to your fans?
Always trust in the Lord because he helps us achieve our goals. Never underestimate any job and when you have got talent go for it and explore more.
