The first edition of the Uganda Diaspora Music Artists Awards happened a few weeks back at the Westin Hotel, Waltham Boston and the awards saw several people walking away with accolades in different categories.
Among the big winners of the evening included George Mulindwa, a veteran reggae artiste who took home the Diaspora Song of the Year which was one of the big categories during the award ceremony.
“We did it. Diaspora song of the year. This truly defines the hard work that we have been putting in and it shows that people appreciate and relate to the song. I am so happy about this,” Mulindwa told sQoop.
The song that enabled him to win this category is Sophia, the lead song off his album titled Sophia, a tribute to his sister Joan Mulindwa who passed on.
The song focuses on the hurdles that people in the diaspora go through regardless of what is thought about them.
“The diaspora you think you know is from the movies but not the reality,” goes the chorus of the song.
The nine-track album also has songs including Ndi Wuwo, Omukazi Gwe Wampa, Luno Oluyimba Lulwo, Will Be Alright, Leka Ssi Ka Bafumbo and Lwaki among others.
George Mulindwa is a reggae artiste who played in cover bands, especially during the Steve Jean, Tshaka Mayanja and Titan Takuba generations.
He was however not the only winner during the night as GNL Zamba won the Best Stage Male Artiste, Joe Malaika took the Best Fashionista award, Karitas Kario took the Best RnB Artiste while Flavia Namulindwa took the Social Media Influencer among other winners.
