The anticipation Ugandans had that the President would open what has by far been the most locked sector still continues for another week and some days going by the president’s remarks during his last address that came three hours to 2022.
But that couldn’t stop revelers from enjoying entertainment and feasting on every type of food during the New Year celebrations. Always known for their fireworks, Sheraton Hotel Kampala didn’t display them after several warnings from the police but they had all the entertainment for their guests to usher in the New Year.
There was food and a lot of drinks in the house but most importantly, entertainment from Uganda’s oldest band Afrigo.
The legendary band was slated to kick off their performance at 6 pm but the endless downpour forced management to keep pushing the event up to 9:30 pm. It started with a speech from Sheraton’s General Manager Jean-Philippe Bittencourt who welcomed the guests and called them upon to look forward to a better 2022 and forget the worries of last year.
“Welcome to 2022. I hope that Covid 19 is part of the past but it should start with us. People must vaccinate, carry out the SOPs so that we live in a safer world so that we carry out our business normally. We have to be resilient and my message is of hope and a message of thankfulness because Ugandans have been supporting us,” he said.
It was then that the guests were ushered to a hefty dinner and then a memorable performance from Afrigo band who performed songs like ‘Twali Twagalana’, ‘Mpa Edembe’, ‘Olimujawa’ and ‘Tukigale’ but it was ‘Obangayina’ by Member of Parliament Rachael Magoola that excited the revelers most. They abandoned their seats and danced to the tune in the evening drizzles. They even requested her to re-do the song one more time as they welcomed the New Year.
