It was both a happy and sombre mood as Law finalists of Kampala International University (K.I.U) held their finalists’ dinner at Hotel International in Muyenga last Saturday. Low in the sense that it was perhaps the last time they were gathering after four years of studies and the dinner that was organized by the K.I.U Law Society gave them a good time to unwind and relieve themselves of the four-year stress in law school.

It was amazing seeing the ‘counsels-to- be’ relax as they shared their memorable moments in law school that got most of them excited.

Ms. Jennifer Ameo, the new patroness of the KIU Law Society encouraged the finalists to keep a positive attitude in all they are going to face after school. While sharing with them her experience after law school, Ms. Amenyo explained to them that they are now going to the hardest part of a law scholar but it is about how they will conduct themselves that will help them through.

“When I was graduating from law school, the then Prime Minister, Rt Hon Amama Mbabazi was the guest of honor. He told us we were just starting the real journey. What you are starting is the hardest but don’t give up. When I started practice, my first employer never paid me a single shilling but I only got a commission from files I moved around,” she shared.

She added: “There are days you are going to feel like giving up. You are going to reach a time and you start seeing things are not working out but everything will after some time start to make sense. The journey to law school is simple; go to the library and pray to God.”

The evening was not about speeches only but having a good time as the fresh graduates were seen abandoning their seats to jam to mixes by the resident deejay of the hotel. Some even requested to mime to some of their favorite requests while others decided to bet who pulls off the best dance moves. The event kicked off with a photo moment on the red carpet for memory purposes for the finalists before they were ushered into the hall.

Dr. Valentine Mbeli the Dean K.I.U Law School congratulated the finalists on the journey and urged them to assume responsibility for their actions/responsibilities. He said that from this point, they (finalists) have a social contract with their parents and benefactors.

“As a university, we have done all it takes to make you good ambassadors of K.I.U and we will be glad if you represent us well and our prayer will be with you that you do wonders out there,” he said.

Mr. Moses Osiya, the outgoing President of the K.I.U Law Society while sharing his experience in law school, thanked all the mentors and the university administration for always according them support each time they needed it. He said all the fond memories of the Law society will remain with him at heart and he will always advise them whenever they need him.
