That ‘90s Show takes place 15 years after the events of That ‘70s Show. The latter is not as popular in Uganda as most popular sitcoms such as Friends. At least not as popular as the memes that have been created from the show. Know that meme where a woman at the table laughs sarcastically and says, “I need a drink”? It is from That ‘70s Show and the woman is Kitty Forman (Jo Rupp). In That ‘70s Show, Kitty and her husband, Red (Smith) let their son, Eric (Topher Grace), and his friends hang out in their basement in Point Place much to Kitty’s pleasure and Red’s Chagrin.

In That ‘90s Show, Eric and his wife, another That ‘70s Show alum, Donna (Laura Prepon), visit Point Place with their daughter, Leia (Haverda) for the summer. After Leia meets her grandparents’ neighbour, Gwen (Aufderheide) and her friends, she asks to stay in Point Place for the entire summer. Leia and her new gang of friends soon turn the basement into their hangout just like her dad did, as they navigate life as teens in 1995.

If you have watched the first show, you will agree with That ‘90s Show’s tagline that times change but teenagers do not.

The show is a teen sitcom yet it is still relatable even if you do not fall within that age bracket. Probably because you will resonate with the adults who are in the teenagers’ lives. It is entertaining, relying a lot on sarcasm and the odd teenage misdemeanor. The gang is a good mix of characters, which keeps things interesting. It will make you want to watch That ‘70s Show after you have binged all 10 episodes. That you will get mad at Netflix for not streaming it too. It is a good thing that the show manages to stand on its own but because the old cast makes guest appearances, you cannot help being curious or wanting to re-watch the first show. The second season will have to offer more than nostalgia to keep it interesting.
