Ugandans miss out on BET Awards, Nigerians take one home

Burna Boy

It is either the music industry of Uganda is only vibrant in East Africa or it is totally lucking. When it comes to Black Entertainment Television Awards commonly known by abbreviations BET Awards, Uganda has never been lucky as we have only managed to get one BET to Uganda in the history of the Ugandan music thumbs up for Eddy kenzo.

Before Eddy Kenzo brought the award home in 2015 after winning the Coca Cola Viewer’s choice Award in the category of Best new International act, Radio and Weasel were nominated in the Best international Act Africa in 2013 losing it to Nigerian singer Ice Prince.

In 2017, the Ghetto Kids were not nominated but were booked to perform at the BET stage and believe me you, they represented Uganda very well. Since then, the name Uganda has never made a statement in the BET Awards leaving it to other African countries.

The management of Nigerian Fresh talent Teni Makanaki were excited when she was nominated in the category of Best New International Act in Africa. They printed Billboards in Lagos to show their excitement ahead of the Awards that came to pass last Sunday at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.

Teni, Burna Boy and Mr Eazi are the only Nigerians in BET Awards and other countries had South African singers AKA and Sho Madjozi. Sho Madjozi emerged winner when she beat singer Teni in the category of Best New International act.

Burna Boy took home one of the biggest BET Award which is the category of Best International Act. The award was received by Bose Ogulu, Burna Boy’s mum and manager, who also attended the award ceremony. He was vying for the accolade with AKA from South Africa, Aya Nakamura from France, Dave from U.K, Dosseh from France, Giggs from U.K and Mr Eazi from Nigeria.

Kenyans and Tanzanians that are always represented by artistes like Harmonize, Diamond Platinumz, Sauti Sol and Alikiba among others were a no-show.
