On Sunday morning, the Miss Tourism Uganda team converged at the Independence Monument in Kampala. The meeting was to embark on a campaign ‘Let the Pearl Shine‘, owned by Miss Tourism Uganda.
According to Mr Ivan Lugya, the National Coordinator of Miss Tourism, the initiative was launched a few years ago to clean different tourism destinations in Uganda. “During our several visits to the tourism sites, we found them littered and to rectify the mess, we kicked off the campaign to tidy up the sites,” Lugya said. He also said that after some time, they realized that the city center needed more attention. That’s how the campaign shifted to cleaning the city centre.
Ahead of World Environmental Day, the Miss Tourism Queens joined forces with the Fun Cyclists. This is a group of cyclists who ride to promote tourism and health. The team from Miss Tourism Uganda consisted of the CEO Ayisha Naggudi, Ivan Lugya the National coordinator, Zakia Lucky the Let the Pearl Shine ambassador and also Miss Tourism Kigezi 2019 together with beauty queens from different regions like North, Buganda, Kyadondo, Busiro, and Ankole among others.
The cleaning started at Nakasero Market where the team swept and collected rubbish littered on the streets. They continued to places like Kisenyi bus terminal, Bakuli, and Kisekka market and then walked back to the Independence monument.
Miss Tourism Uganda was recently launched and the search is taking place in different regions to find a queen who will vie for the top prize of Miss Tourism Uganda 2023/24 on September 9th at Kampala Serena Hotel.
