Focus: She begun by sub-renting a place with a friend before opening her own shop. A year later Brenda Mirembe’s shop is worth Shs60m.
What is the name of your business?
I call it Rosepetals boutique.

Why that particular name?
I chose the name because rose petals are beautiful and attractive, and that is what my business is.

When did you start this business?
I started in 2010 but I did not have a name yet. I was sub-renting with a friend, until June last year when I decided to start my own business.

How much did you invest in this business?
I started with Shs50m.

That is a lot of money. Where did you get all that from and how much is this business worth now?
I got a small loan and paid back as the business was growing. My husband also invested some money into the business. Now, the business is worth more that Shs60m because I have to replace whatever I sell.

What items do you deal in?
I sell and hire out bridal gowns and changing dresses. Also, I deal in gomesis, dresses, tops, shoes, bags and jewellery.

Why do you sell or hire out only ladies’ stuff?
I do not have any interest in men’s items and besides, my network is basically around women.

What is the price for your items?
My prices differ, depending on the item. Tops go for 25k to 30k, gowns for hire are 800k to Shs1m, lace gowns for first wear go for 700k but if it was worn before, it is 500k. Bags cost from 70k-200k, shoes go for 80k-150k, office dresses 50k-150k, renting changing dresses 300k to Shs1m and buying is 500k-3m, jewellery 10k to 20k. Nigerian attire is hired for 30k, Karamojong attire for 25k, South African attire with jewellery is 150k and bridal gomesi for hire is also 150k.
What are some of the challenges you face doing this business?
The only challenge I face is the high exchange rate of the dollar. It affects me in a way that I buy the items at a high price but my clients expect the prices to be at the same rate when it was still down.

Where do you buy these items from?
UK, Turkey and China.

Do you travel all the way to buy them?
I order online and sometimes send people who are travelling to bring them for me.

What inspired you to start up this business?
The passion for fashion.

What are your future plans?
I would like to own a salon and bridal shop so that my clients can get the whole wedding package from my place.

Where are you located?
My shop is located at Universal House next to MM Plaza on Luwum Street, Shop G03 on level 1.
