Meet up: Winnie Nwagi came third in the last Coca Cola Rated Next.

Hi, Winnie. How was the Coca Cola Rated Next experience?
I always hated being judged, but my friends pushed me to audition and before I knew it, I was among the top 10. I came third in the end.

What songs do you think pushed you to that position?
Nderea by Irene Namubiru and Oluyimba by Maddox Ssematimba. I gave my all while performing those songs.

Why did you choose to sign with Swangz Avenue?
Because Benon, who is one of the directors at Swangz was a judge during the show and he spotted me. He saw how talented I am and next thing I knew, we were signing a five-year contract.

Tell me about yourself?
I have a four-year-old daughter and I am simple, and down to earth.

What are your expectations in music?
I would like to become the best female artiste in Uganda and be an idol to many who would like to make it in the music industry.

Your breakthrough song Embeera is doing well on most Ugandan charts. What is the inspiration behind it?
The song was written by Zulanda, a producer at Swangz. It is about giving affection to a loved one. It is the kind of song that shows how people should treat those they love when in a relationship.

So is Winnie in a relationship?
I am a single mother who is not searching.

What happened to your baby daddy?
I don’t want to talk about him because he’s in my past.

Has your music career started paying?
Not yet but I’m hopeful.

So how do you make ends meet?
Well, my management takes care of the most part, then I backup artistes who pay me some little money that I use to meet my other needs and take care of my baby.

How many songs do you have so far?
Three; Embera, Katonokatono and Gwenonya. All have videos.
What do you love most on your body?
My smile and waist.

How old are you?
I am turning 26 this year.

What challenges have you faced so far in music?
Apart from negativity on social media, nothing else.

How do you call your style of music?
Afro RnB.

How does it feel being signed to a label that has a talented artiste like Irene Ntale?
I feel blessed having her around. She’s good to me, advises me on several occasions and calms me down when I am nervous. She is not selfish at all.

What was the best show you have performed at?
Gundezze by King Saha. The crowd was warm and they kept encouraging me.

What is your best TV programme?
The Beat on NTV.

What would you be if not an artiste?
Probably a dancer, video vixen or an actress.
