The Track: Ye Kikyo – Dr Hilderman

Hilderman

This song will give us a very good chance to understand who Dr Hilderman is. And at the end of it all, we will have succeeded in failing to understand him. There was that time when the kind of music this fellow was doing seemed to suggest he had gone through a personal turning point. There was Abita Ebikute and Talindeka and Mukama Wange, which easily made the fellow sound like the most born-again musician we have seen.

Then Ye Kikyo comes in and what are his introductory remarks? “I’m not a pastor; I’m not a preacher. I’m this ragamuffin with a clear future.” Vixens in their most scanty, twerking to their damndest, are back to his videos and suddenly, you sense that the Dr Hilderman of Mazongoto and Campus Girl is back.

Aside from the artistes’ identity clashes, the song is a made-for-the-dancefloor kind of song, with fitting groove lines. Its subject matter can be summarised as a call to live, to be happy and have fun, and not personalise sorrow, because you do not own sorrow.

Dr Hilderman manages to get us dancing to this, but leaves those concerned with deciphering who he is, all the more confused.
