I have divided time for music and politics

Gospel Artist, Judith Babirye

MAMA KATONDA TALIMBA: Singer Judith Babirye last year got elected as Woman MP for Buikwe District. And since she got into the August House, we have heard less music. Tonight she will be in concert at Serena Hotel and she shares what goers should expect.

What have you been up to lately?
I have been focusing more on charity work because it is at this time that it needs me more. I have a charity organisation called Arms of Love Uganda and it has been in operation but I only registered it last year. We take care of teenage mothers in different parts of Uganda.

Why did you decide to name your concert Mama Katonda Talimba?
Everyone on earth has a mother who pays a big price in their lives. Mothers do everything to see to it that we live a better life and when you connect a mothers’ hardwork with God’s will, you will find out that one becomes a better person at the end of it all. This therefore explains the title which says when mothers are there for us, God can never lie that they won’t make us make it in life.

You were last seen in concert in 2014, why wasn’t there any concert in 2015 and 2016?
It is the way I like to do it because by the time I come out to give my fans a concert, it has to be good and fresh. So I guarantee you that the Mama Katonda Talimba concert will be good because on top of all, it is for a good cause, which is fundraising to help teenage mothers in Uganda.

How much do you expect to get out of this concert?
It is not about how much we need to make the charity work a success, but the little or much that we shall get will be used to reach out to these young girls.

We have seen artistes always say concert money is going to charity, but we never see it put to good use. How sure are we you are going to use it for charity?
It is good you are a journalist, you can come with us after the concert and you account for the money. We will be in Buikwe, Mityana, Luweero and Masaka among other districts.

Artistes are known for selling concerts to event promoters, who is handling yours?
My manager Wilberforce Kalema is a renown Events promoter so there was no need of selling the concert or hiring an events promoter. He is good at organising events but he will get help from Fenon Events. I believe the event will be powerful.

What should fans expect from the concert?
They should expect an energetic performance, good lighting and good sound. They should expect to come and have fun with me.

How has it been juggling music and politics?
It only requires one to give everything their best. I personally believe in the division of labour. If it is time to serve my people of Buikwe, I do it well and when it is time to get to studio, I equally do it well and make sure music does not clash with politics.

How have you managed to stay relevant in the music Industry?
I don’t have wrangles with anyone, I don’t have fights with fellow music, the only thing I have focused on doing good music for my fans. Staying in Touch with God nothing is impossible and my fans have kept me going in the music Industry.

Taking a break
Christine Judith Babirye last held a concert at Kampala Serena Hotel in 2014. The concert dubbed Weebale Mukama was before she contested as Member of Parliament Buikwe District. It seems she politics has taken most of her time because the latest song she has was done in 2016 and that is Nkuyite Ani. Babirye says she likes spacing her shows to give her fans the best so she might return with another concert after three or four years.
