Ugandan AfroBeat artist, Joseph Mayanja, popularly known as Jose Chameleone says he has joined People Power an Opposition political pressure group led by fellow singer-cum-politician Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine.

Chameleone recently declared his intention to contest for Kampala Capital City Authority Lord Mayor seat currently occupied by Erias Lukwago.

Speaking during DP- UYD reunion meeting at Kakindu stadium in Jinja District on Wednesday, Chameleone clad in a red shirt and beret- the official colour for People Power movement- said he is now part of the group.

Mr Mayanja was also handed a hoe which is the official symbol for Democratic Party and gestured as People Power and DP supporters cheered.

In his speech, Chameleone said opposition political parties need to get united if they are to achieve their goals.

“I’m not smart? We shall not win if we are not united,’’ he said.

Chameleone also denied reports that he is in the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.

“I’m in Opposition, stop pushing me to NRM. I’m not different from you.  I’m the only person who had not yet joined you. I thank Kyagulanyi for coming out. This is the time for youth,’’ he said.

The Moto Moto singer then asked Lord Mayor Lukwago to hand over the keys to him because he is ready to take over.

“Tell Mr Lukwago that, he should hand over the keys to me. Some thought I was not serious, I am educated, I’m not in drama, I’m very serious,’’ he said.

Bobi Wine in his address welcomed Chameleone to his pressure group.

“I’m very happy to see Chameleone. It gives me more strength because it was my dream to see all Ugandans from all walks of life including farmers, motorcycle riders, musicians come together to fight for their country,’’ he said.

Bbi Wine said everyone should come out and do something because the victory is near.

Several Ugandan artists have of late joined politics in a bid to influence change in their society. Some of them include gospel singer Judith Babirye, comedian Kato Lubwama and singer Daniel Kazibwe aka Ragga Dee, among others
