Journalist fundraise for fallen comrade Mubiru’s family

kakebeWhile covering a boat cruise in January, Mubiru Kakebe, a New Vision photo journalist took shots of a one Percy, who is said not to be a stranger to lack of self-control during fun gatherings.

On the said evening, Percy is believed to have been in a compromising position by the time Mubiru took the shot. She confronted him and demanded that he deletes the photos he had taken, to which Mubiru declined. Percy is said to have headed to the bar, bought a bottle of alcohol, broke part of it and used the other part to hit Mubiru, who sustained a cut on the arm. Mubiru filed an assault case against Percy, but he is said to have forgiven her. However, Mubiru’s wound didn’t fully heal and almost two months later, he was admitted to Mulago hospital’s IntensiveCare Unit after he collapsed in office.
Mubiru later succumbed to a tetanus infection that was caused by the wound and was laid to rest at his ancestral home in Wakiso District last week.

Several journalists have condemned the actions that led to Mubiru’s death and a bunch of them have promised to ensure justice is served. And besides mourning, Fireworks Advertising general manager Muhereza Kyamutetera led a campaign that started on Monday urging all journalists on their Uganda Journalists Facebook page to contribute towards helping the late Mubiru’s widow and two children.
The group coordinator Grace Natabaalo offered her number and several journalists on the group have been sending their contributions towards their deceased comrade’s young family. According to reports from Grace, her phone was very busy with mobile money texts since Tuesday. Excellent move comrades. RIP Mubiru Kakebe.
