DJ Aludah bought drinks for a chance to play

DJ Aludah

DJ Aludah is one of the most sought after DJs in Uganda but it has not been a smooth ride for him to get to where he is today. A few days ago, Aludah, real name James Mugume, recounted what he went through to get a spot on the decks at former Steak Out back in 2010, saying he had to buy an expensive drink to get a chance to showcase his talent.

“When I had just returned to Uganda in 2010 from Nairobi to pursue my DJing career, I had two places in mind I really wanted to play at. Steak Out and Club Rouge. I went to Steak Out multiple times trying to get the boss’ attention; he always promised but would never return my calls.

One day I went in on a Tuesday night, walked up to him, asked what he was drinking and he said Black Label. I painfully bought him a bottle with a smile and walked away without mentioning anything to do with DJing. He called me the next morning and asked if I was available to perform on Saturday, Utake night with Nonini and Klear Kut. The rest is history!”
