Joe Gayi wins LÁtelier award

Joe Gayi

Joe Gayi became the first visual artist from Uganda to win in Absa’s L’Atelier 2023 Awards. The ceremony took place at The Galleria in Sandton, Johannesburg recently.

Gayi, a commercial Industrial Arts and Design graduate from Nkumba University gained recognition as one of the three winning ambassadors alongside Edward Lawerh (Ghana).

This year’s awards were historic as Gayi became the first artist from Uganda to claim the spotlight, highlighting the diversification of winning artists from various African countries and their growing impact on the continent.

Gayi will among other prizes take up a residency in South Africa from May 1 to June 30, 2024 where he will attend 10 masterclasses with leading experts from across the globe.

He will also embark on a four-month mentoring programme with a leading authority within the visual arts from Uganda and he will host a solo exhibition in Uganda.
