The history of the mutants continues in the latest X-Men movie. For the sake of my friends who say they lose the ‘gas’ to watch these types of movies because they cannot keep up with the characters, let me give this movie some chronological perspective. X-Men: Apocalypse is the third movie showing us how the mutants came about. The first was X-Men: First Class, which was followed by X-Men: Days of Future Past. So you may want to watch the first two in order to put this one in perspective.
In the latest movie, the villainous Apocalypse (Isaac) wakes from a sleep of more than 1,000 years, as villains usually do. He is not amused by the way the world operates and in his twisted way, decides that the only way to save it is to purge it so that there is a new order. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Almost every apocalyptic movie has the same tune so his name is fitting. To accomplish this, he gets four mutants on his side.

The four Horsemen of Apocalypse, as they are called include Storm aka Famine (Shipp), Magneto aka War (Fassbender), Psylocke aka Pestilence (Munn) and Angel aka Death (Hardy). From their names, it is easy to see how Apocalypse plans to destroy the world. Good thing is that the world has the likes of Professor X (McAvoy), Mystique (Lawrence), Beast (Holt) and the rest of the X-Men on their side, as long as they can actually defeat Apocalypse.
What makes the movie is the stellar performance of the cast; sometimes it feels like the actors don’t put on their best performances. There is no such feeling with X-Men Apocalypse. The other thing is that this is an action movie that actually gets you to think, it is not just fight sequences and mindless special effects. It covers some deep stuff on humanity.
However, even with these strengths, this is not the most outstanding X-Men movies. For anyone who is not an X-Men fan, all the characters and activity might confuse and overshadow the good acting. Also, it would be nice to have an X-Men movie that does not live us a little depressed for the characters. Nonetheless, it is a good watch for the cinema.
