The track: Muna kampala – Ykee Benda

ykee
The bar is one of the places people will confess to have heard a song for the first time. Two weeks ago my ears chanced on this track, Muna Kampala, as I sipped on a glass of vodka. Ykee Benda is a 21-year-old multi genre artiste who is not only fresh to the music scene, but is also rumoured to be affiliated to A Pass. On this track, Benda makes a good choice of title, Muna Kampala, which means ‘one who belongs to the city’. This attracts a listener. He kicks off the song with the chorus, confessing how his city girl has swept him off his feet. With a soft touch to the instrumental by producer Nessim, Benda takes us where it all started, telling us he found this beautiful girl in his town. He approaches her, daring to commit suicide if she rejects him. On the next verse, he promises her lots of things and asks her to be with him. His vocals and how they sync with each element of the song from the instrumental to the connection from verse to verse are the highlight of this song. In reality this approach would earn you a slap from a typical city girl. Benda however leaves us in suspense, not telling us what happened after he asked. The suspension is a good part of art, especially for a young talent. This track surely earned Ykee Benda audience but he needs to really work hard to break through.
