UBC TV pulls down website after it runs porn website links

Up until this morning, Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) TV’s website seemed to be under the control of some weird persons. The website that previously carried stories on general news, entertainment and current affairs among other stories, had a few strange things on its website’s homepage. The top story was one on sex and it’s headline was “Let’s talk sex”.

The story which had the byline Carolyne Nakazibwe and was most likely picked from The Observer’s website, was not one to worry about until the reader came across some links embedded within the article. The hyperlinks were labelled xnxx, African porn and porn movies. The links were those of pornographic sites with sex videos.

In December last year, at least 25 out of 27 porn sites in Uganda were blocked by Internet Service Providers under the orders of Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) so we are wondering why these sites can still be accessed.

When we talked to Maurice Mugisha, the Managing Director of UBC, he said that they stopped using the website to post their information as UBC TV. “We went on the National Information Technology Authority platform,” Mugisha said. When we checked this morning the website had been pulled down and cannot be accessed.
