For the third time in a row, singer Jose Chameleone’s son Abba Marcus Mayanja is Swimmer of the Year at Greenhill Academy. He was awarded with a certificate of recognition by the school management to his parents’ glee.
Abba won the accolade by beating everyone in his age bracket and some older children in all swimming competitions at the school this year. Abba also represented Greenhill in swimming competitions in Nairobi and he performed well.
And since all that had kept the youngster from joining the national team was age, and it was simply a matter of time. That moment came a few days ago when Abba celebrated his 10th birthday.
According to sports pundits, at 10 years, Abba is eligible to compete as the youngest member on Team Uganda in any swimming competition.
Well, looks like Taata Abba also knows the rules; after his 10th birthday celebrations and now the ‘best swimmer award’ from his school, Chameleone has sworn to do everything possible to ensure Abba makes it to the next Olympic games in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.
Chameleone told us all that is required of Abba by the Olympics committee is to be within a record of swimming 50 metres for 25 seconds.
“So far, he does 50 metres in 32 to 33 seconds. He only has eight seconds to hit the mark and now that he has grown a bit older, we can only hope for the best. Everyone had better join Team Abba for 2016 Olympics, don’t say we didn’t tell you,” an excited Chameleone told us.
Meanwhile, before he hits the Olympics qualification mark, he is set to represent his school at a swimming competition at Kabira Country Club tomorrow.
All the best, Abba!
