Jubilation as singer Kenzo returns home

Entebbe International Airport was on a stand still yesterday as hundreds of Ugandans welcomed singer Edirisa Musuuza, known by stage name Eddy Kenzo.

Kenzo, who was out of Uganda performing in one country after another, returned home with an award for emerging the best entertaining artiste in Africa during the African Entertainment Awards held in the US last weekend.

Speaking to journalists in Makindye-Kizungu Zone, a city suburb, Kenzo said the chaos at the airport was not about anyone being hurt but his people who went to welcome.

“I am someone who came from the ghetto and made it big because of music. I was away and while there, I won the award of the best entertaining artiste in Africa during the African Entertainment Awards held in the US,” Kenzo said.

He added that there is no problem with Ugandans celebrating his success. He also said if the boda boda riders, who were arrested when they went to the airport to receive him, are not released, he would join them in jail.

The singer has had a tumultuous two weeks in his private life after the mother of his daughter, and also fellow singer Rema Namakula, introduced another man to her parents.

It was all well until a video went viral of Sheikh Nuhu Muzaata, who congratulated Rema for surviving a “love nigger” who did not want to marry her but only wanted to waste her time.

The video also had the religious leader cautioning those men to marry their mothers.
Kenzo took matters personally and expressed displeasure on social media, asking the Muslim cleric to apologise over the remarks.

Asked about the matter yesterday, Kenzo declined to respond to the question, saying he moved on and Ugandans, too, should move on and celebrate his new musical achievement.
