I chose music over marriage – gospel singer Suzan Wetsetse

Suzan Wetsetse

As we celebrate Women’s Month, we love to bring you stories of women who are breaking the odds to stand out in the entertainment industry. Suzan Wetsetse, a Ugandan musician is one such individual.

She describes herself as a God-fearing and hardworking mother of one. Suzan hails from Bududa District in Mbale, Uganda. She was born into a family of six. She is known for her passion for soul music.

Suzan Wetsetse was a happily married woman until the relationship started intimidating her career. Her husband preferred her to quit music because of the nature of the industry. However, when things got overly complicated, Suzan had to move out of the marriage with her child and become a full-time gospel singer. John Kenny caught up with her.

Why did you choose music over marriage?

I left marriage for music because I was asked to choose between music and marriage. Both were dear to me but I chose music because I wanted to do it not only for me but also for the girl child. I have gotten to love myself more and work on more music projects. Also, every win I am getting in music pushes me to do more and I love what I am doing.

What do you advise young girls who are trying to choose between marriage and becoming independent?

Any relationship, be it a friendship or romantic doesn’t support your dreams, do away with it. Friendships and relationships that support your goals, keep them.

How have you managed to grow a fan base, especially in Mbale?

I grew up in a Christian family, and doing gospel music is my way of preaching the gospel of hope and salvation. The music industry in Mbale is quite interesting, new talents keep unfolding every day. The best part is that the fans support their language (Lumasaba/Lugisu). So the fact that I sing in my native language it was a bit easy for me to gain fans.

What did it feel like when you won an award at the Royal Gospel Music Awards?

The 3rd Royal Gospel Music Awards were organized in January 2024. Just for the record, nominations alone got me excited that I had been recognised at such a level. I immediately encouraged my people to vote and yeah we all won. I was hopeful because of the hard work I had put in. But, still, I wasn’t sure until my name was read. Those are the real butterflies that one feels in the stomach. This was a win for everyone that believed in me and that voted for me.

So are you going to stick to gospel music or will you mix it up to increase the fan base?

As a believer, I know that I am destined for bigger things. So I will stick to gospel music.
