In a significant move aimed at improving health and wellness among Ugandans living abroad, the Ugandan North American Association (UNAA) has announced a strategic partnership with the Uganda North American Medical Society (UNAMS). The collaboration, formalized through a three-year Memorandum of Understanding, will focus on enhancing access to preventive healthcare, medical education, and outreach services for Ugandans in the diaspora.
Under the agreement, UNAMS becomes UNAA’s official healthcare and public health services partner. The initiative will kick off with a major health screening exercise during the upcoming UNAA Annual Convention in New Orleans, where attendees will have access to free medical check-ups and expert consultations.
“We encourage all members to take advantage of this opportunity—ideally upon arrival—before diving into the full slate of convention celebrations and activities,” the two organizations said in a joint statement.
The partnership underscores a shared commitment to building a culture of health consciousness within the Ugandan diaspora community. It will also strengthen UNAMS’s existing programs, including its virtual public health education series, which covers topics like preventive care, chronic disease management, mental health, and navigating healthcare systems.
In addition to its health education efforts, UNAMS runs a robust mentorship program for aspiring medical students, residents, and fellows across North America. The initiative has played a crucial role in nurturing the next generation of Ugandan healthcare professionals and is expected to grow even further under the new collaboration.
“UNAA is proud to welcome UNAMS as its trusted healthcare and services partner,” said UNAA President and CEO, Mr. Lambert Etibot. “This collaboration reflects our organization’s continued commitment to the well-being of our members by providing meaningful, impactful services that enrich the lives of Ugandans in the diaspora. We look forward to a productive and transformative partnership.”
With this new partnership, UNAA and UNAMS are positioning health not just as a service, but as a shared community value—one that will be visible, accessible, and celebrated at the heart of the diaspora’s most important gatherings.
