Marrie Trends: Subtle elegance meets bold, timeless appeal

Mariam Nakasagga, the lead designer of Marrie Trends is redefining Ugandan fashion.

Mariam Nakasagga, the founder of Marrie Trends is leading the wave of bold, creative, and fearless designers. Her work speaks to a growing appetite for elegance with meaning, offering pieces that are refined yet powerfully expressive. Mariam opens up about her journey and what lies ahead for Marrie Trends.

Tell us about yourself.

y name is Mariam Nakasagga, the director and lead designer at Marrie Trends. Fashion started as a quiet passion. I have always been drawn to beauty, detail, and how clothing can reflect identity. That passion evolved into a calling. At 24, I took a leap of faith and opened my shop, the beginning of a beautiful, transformative journey.

What inspired you to pursue fashion?

I noticed how style changes someone’s confidence. Watching someone light up in a well-designed outfit made me want to be part of that transformation. I wanted to create pieces that help people feel seen, celebrated, and confident in who they are.

Did you study fashion formally?

I am self-taught. I believe learning never ends, especially in such a dynamic and creative industry. I have attended several workshops and short courses to sharpen my skills.

Describe your design aesthetic in three words.

Elegant. Timeless. Feminine.

What sets Marrie Trends apart in the fashion world?

Marrie Trends is built on simplicity, authenticity, and elegance. It whispers confidently. Each piece is crafted to reflect the inner beauty and personality of the wearer. Our attention to detail, clean finishes, and personalised tailoring.

Who is your target audience?

Someone who values quiet elegance. She is confident, graceful, and drawn to timeless style over fleeting trends.

What inspires your collections?

Many things; Ugandan culture, art, music, nature, and even silence. Sometimes, a shade in the sky or the texture of traditional fabric sparks an entire concept. I find beauty in the obvious and the overlooked.

Walk us through your creative process.

It begins with a feeling or an image that stirs emotion. Then, I sketch, select fabrics, and experiment with silhouettes. I always keep the client in mind and how she will feel in the garment. The process involves fittings, adjustments, and a lot of care to bring each piece to life.

Your most memorable piece or collection so far…?

One of my favourites was a custom gown I designed for a public figure attending a major event. It was minimalist but powerful. Watching her carry it with confidence plus the feedback it gained reminded me why I love what I do.

Have you worked with any celebrities or notable clients?

Yes, I have dressed several celebrities and influencers. Those relationships are meaningful to me.

What fabrics or techniques do you enjoy working with?

I love silk, crepe, and lace. Fabrics that drape beautifully and feel luxurious. I also enjoy subtle embellishments and tailoring that bring out elegance in simplicity.

Describe the Ugandan fashion scene today.

It is vibrant and full of untapped potential.

Challenges Ugandan designers face…

Access to high-quality materials, limited funding, and insufficient exposure. But there is a strong sense of community here and collaboration helps us grow and push boundaries together.

What makes Ugandan fashion unique?

The fusion of tradition and modernity. Ugandan fashion tells rich, colourful, deeply rooted stories that resonate globally.

Do you believe Ugandan fashion has a place on global platforms?

Absolutely. The creativity and originality are world-class. With the right visibility and support, our work can shine on international runways and on global markets.

What has helped Marrie Trends grow?

Consistency, word of mouth, and strong client relationships. I listen to feedback and evolve with intention. Building trust and staying true to the brand’s values have been key.

How do you balance the creative and business sides of fashion?

I try to give both the attention they deserve. Creativity fuels the vision, but business sustains it. I have learnt to stay organised, ask for help, and make time for strategy as much as design.

Have you explored international markets yet?

Not fully, but it is something I am actively working towards. I believe Marrie Trends has a quiet strength that could resonate with international audiences.

What are you currently working on? I am working on a new collection exploring African minimalism, pieces that are bold in presence but understated in detail. It is a concept I have been nurturing for a while.

Where do you see Marrie Trends in five years?

I see the brand expanding across East Africa, with a stronger online presence and curated retail experiences. I also hope to mentor young designers while staying rooted in our core values.

Two cents for aspiring designers in Uganda?

Start with what you have. Do not wait for perfect conditions. Focus on your craft and avoid comparisons.
