Featuring the legendary Afrigo Band, Uganda’s longest-standing musical group, the fifth episode of Tusker Malt Conversessions aired on YouTube yesterday at 6pm and it was nothing short of iconic.

The episode unfolded as a rich tapestry of history, emotion and masterful musical artistry. Set against an expansive stage tailored to accommodate the full ensemble, the show provided an ideal backdrop for the band’s dynamic and soulful presence. It was a celebration of resilience, legacy and unity.

From the first note of their opening song Sirina, viewers were transported through time. Afrigo Band took fans on an exhilarating journey through their discography, performing beloved tracks like Music, Jim, Obangaina, Sikulimba and Abaana B’Afrigo. The performances were heartfelt and powerful, showing that Afrigo continues to play with the same fire and passion that has defined their nearly 50-year legacy.

Running for over an hour, the episode stood out for its emotional depth and narrative resonance. Every band member was given the space to share personal stories that offered fans a rare and intimate glimpse into the band’s inner world.

Founding member Moses Matovu reflected on the struggles of navigating music through Uganda’s political instability, recalling disrupted education and the difficulty of sourcing instruments during turbulent times. Yet in 1975, amid the chaos, Afrigo Band was born from a dream to unite people through music.

“Even with political instability, we found a way to keep the music alive,” Matovu said.

Joanita Kawalya, Sarah Namulondo, Racheal Magoola and Herman Ssewanyana opened up about the band’s evolution, internal dynamics and the personal sacrifices made along the way. From pioneering dance routines to balancing music with family life, their reflections painted a moving picture of endurance and creativity.

“The work often meant being away from home at critical times. But it’s the strength of our relationships that kept us going,” said Racheal Magoola.

Mercy Atwongyeire, Project Manager at Uganda Breweries Limited, praised Afrigo Band’s impact and performance, calling them a cornerstone of Uganda’s musical heritage.

“Afrigo Band is a national treasure. Their performance on Tusker Malt Conversessions was a celebration of everything we stand for authenticity, artistry and timeless excellence. Through this platform, we aim to give fans a deeper connection to the music they love and the legends behind it. As we build toward the grand finale, fans can expect an unforgettable experience that honours the past, celebrates the present and inspires the future of Ugandan music.”

With just one episode left this season, Afrigo Band’s appearance stands as a stirring reminder of the enduring power of music to heal, inspire and connect generations.
