Watching Ransom Canyon left me feeling the same way I do when I try to scratch an itch and fail to hit that sweet spot. It has all the ingredients of the kind of delicious series you would love to lose yourself in over the weekend. A solid lineup of a cast, a plot that promises as much drama as it does romance and a beautiful setting. The cast features Josh Duhamel as Staten, a rancher who is reeling from the death of his son and wife, only years apart. Then we have Minka Kelly, who plays Quinn, owner of the local drinking hole and best friend of Staten’s late wife. And yes, you guessed right, these two like each other and you will go through the whole will-they-won’t-they dance.
The plot is not as straightforward though. Yes, we have Staten and Quinn’s story but we also have Staten dealing with rival ranchers, anomalies in the accident that killed his son and a teenage love triangle, among other sub-plots. However, the show manages to be a little slow despite all its potential. I blame the writers. You can see what they are trying to do but they stick to the usual themes and end up offering nothing new. It all feels familiar to series like Virgin River, just with cowboy hats and cattle, and without the depth in character. Yet Ransom Canyon still makes for a good series to watch in the background.
