THE VIDEO: Nkulowozaako – Eddy Kenzo

We need to summon Madame Nyamutoo… for some quick answers. First, it is clear Eddy Kenzo has gotten lazy. And this video is proof of a man who has lost the hunger and thirst for that art. He still dreams of merging some authentic African culture with the modern/global trends. But the touch has become morbidly blunt.

What happened in this video? Eddy Kenzo gathered a group of Habeshas, got them dressed in their Kemis, and then slapped them at various points in the music video. The rest of the storyline is an amateurish recording of a man pursuing and yearning for his lover. It all looks like a poor man’s attempt at cultural appropriation.

What if this video took us both to Addis and to Mekele. What if it brought to life that Ethiopian way of life? With some mules? With some Ethiopian coffee and Injera. Then it would have made sense. For now, it is just because it is Eddy Kenzo but the video is not giving!
