Popular musician Eddy Kenzo, whose real name is Edirisa Musuuza, has been appointed by President Museveni as the Presidential Adviser on Creatives, according to recent reports.
Kenzo, who is also the President of the Uganda National Musicians Federation, joins the expanding list of advisers to the Head of State. His appointment is anticipated to benefit an industry that has long been perceived as neglected by the government.
Kenzo’s new role comes at a time when many in the creative sector are calling for amendments to the Copyright and Neighboring Rights Act of 2006. Many believe that such changes could address numerous challenges in the industry and provide fairer opportunities for artists to benefit from their intellectual work.
Kenzo’s prominence as a musician and leader of a major musicians’ association likely contributed to his appointment. He follows in the footsteps of other musicians who have served as presidential envoys and advisers, including Mark Bugembe (alias Bucha Man), who was appointed as the President’s special envoy to the ghetto, and Catherine Kusasira, who served as the Presidential Adviser on Kampala.
One of Kenzo’s significant challenges will be advising the President on the genuine issues and needs of an industry with the potential to create employment and generate income for many young Ugandans.
The creative industry encompasses various sectors, including fashion, visual arts, film, literature, performing arts, cultural and natural heritage, and audio-visual interactive media, among others.
