Juliana Kanyomozi opens up on why she likes Azawi

Veteran musician Juliana Kanyomozi offered some valuable advice to aspiring artistes during a recent conversation with Ruth Kalibbala Bwanika.

Kanyomozi emphasized the importance of creating music with lasting appeal, citing Azawi as an example of an artiste who achieves this in the Ugandan music scene today.

The ‘Woman’ hitmaker said every artiste must take time and ask themselves the purpose of the song and the legacy it leaves.

“You have to have purpose. Why do you sing? How do you want to be remembered? What effect do you want your music to have on people?

“That’s why I like Azawi. There’s a way she combines those things. She’ll do a club banger but when you listen to the lyrics, there’s a storyline. So you need that, it’s important,” she stated. The Ugandan singer shared that she prioritizes her artistic purpose, even rejecting catchy songs that don’t align with her message or what she wants to express through her music. Azawi embarked on her musical journey while still a young person and her passion for music and performing arts sparked when she joined the Kika Dance Troupe in P.5.

She worked with several performance organizations, including the Crane Performers, as her talent grew as she advanced through her studies.

But in 2016, things unexpectedly changed for Azawi when she met Ugandan rapper Eddy Kenzo. She was a band member at the time, contracted to play for a concert that Kenzo was hosting.

She had no idea how this event would impact her future as a musician. Kenzo invited her to work with him on a song he was recording during the concert rehearsals.

The ‘Summer Bae’ singer wrote “Fish in My Heart” for Kenzo and kick-started her music career.
