Is President Museveni back on Facebook?

After three years without using Facebook, a post was put up on Friday 16, February on President Yoweri Museveni’s official Facebook Page. The President’s page was last used on 11 January 2021 a few days before the polls.

The government ordered the shutdown of social media platforms in January 2021 just a few days before the country’s general elections. They were later opened days after the elections apart from Facebook. Since then, social media users have always been accessing Facebook using Virtual Private Networks (VPN).

The shutdown was fueled by the blocking of over 200 accounts and pages of government officials and some National Resistance Movement (NRM) supporters by Facebook. Ever since the government made this bold move, the Fountain of Honour has been mostly using his X (Formerly Twitter) account to communicate and address different matters of national importance.

In a way of defending the government’s decision to block the social networking site, President Museveni said that Facebook was arrogant and was being used to attack the government. He further explained that Facebook would be opened in case they stopped playing games.

Did the recent post on the President’s page mean that Facebook is officially open in Uganda? The answer to the question may not be as simple as you may think because the post was later deleted from the page after one day.
