Shs13b MTV Africa Music Awards deal to be investigated

Uganda was set to host the MAMAs in 2021. This was the first time the prestigious awards were going to take place in Uganda and would virtually be hosted by DJ Khaled. Seeing this as a huge platform, the government agreed to a sponsorship deal of Shs13b that was paid in two installments of Shs10.4b (paid on March 12, 2020), and another Shs2.6b (paid on January 19, 2021) projecting huge tourism benefits. However, the MAMAs were cancelled without any clear reasons.

The debate has returned only that this time, Members of Parliament want an investigation into the Shs13b the Ministry of Tourism paid for Uganda to host the awards.

Nakawa East MP Balimwezo Nsubuga said: “It is unfortunate that up to now, there has not been any accountability on the expenditure of the Shs13b. We want to find ways of whipping the accounting officers who expended this money”.

He added: “We are going to call for a thorough investigation into this matter and into what happened to this money and we demand that the people responsible for this expenditure be investigated.”
