It is quite refreshing to see young people taking the ropes on pushing the creative space forward and being the driving force behind the growth of the industry.

Last weekend, Troy Elimu, a budding fashion designer, synonymous with his denim-incorporated fashion brand opened doors to his new store at MoTiv in Kampala.

In partnership Johnny Walker, Red Label the artisan was joined by different creatives such as visual artists, performers, fashion lovers, socialites as well as well wishers who seemed to have a red theme going around for obvious reasons.

The designer who creates reimagined denim pieces that are enhanced with painted portraits has been in the industry for over four years and explained that having his own store is somewhat of a dream come true.

“It’s exciting and fulfilling to finally have an address for my clothing store, Denim Cartel! It’s a significant milestone in my journey as a business owner. Having a physical location will not only provide a space for customers to visit and explore my collection, but it also adds a sense of legitimacy and permanence to my brand,” Elimu explained during the launch.

He further explained that as the brand continues to grow, some of his long-term plans are expanding his product range, establishing an online presence to reach a wider customer base, and collaborating with other fashion brands, artists, and creatives in Kampala and all over the world and considering opening additional store locations in different cities. “It’s important to assess market trends, customer feedback, and opportunities for growth to shape my long-term strategy. I’d also love to supply denim on a big scale and be able to create employment and skilling opportunities for youth and young designers,” he concluded.

The event was organised with support from the FG Foundation, ATS Events and Motiv, with performances from the Saxophonist Mwesigwa Eddy, and DJsBonqie, Geeman and Melvyn offering the perfect entertainment backdrop throughout the evening.
