UMA is alive – Cindy reassures Association members

Cindy Sanyu

Cinderella Sanyu alias Cindy, head of the Uganda Musicians Association, has issued a statement reaffirming the association’s existence. According to Cindy, UMA has been engaged in discussions regarding the formation of the proposed Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF) since May 27, 2023.

“We want to assure you that UMA has been actively engaging in these discussions and is open to further consultations to best represent your interests. Our goal is to work collaboratively with all stakeholders, harmonizing our industry and taking it to greater heights,” said Cindy.

“We are currently awaiting guidance from the Uganda National Cultural Centre

(UNCC) and the National Cultural Forum (NCF), as they play a crucial role in guiding us on the roadmap for the federation of the music industry we understand that this is a significant moment, and your questions and concerns are important to us. Rest assured, your voice matters every step of the way. You will be involved in the next steps of this process and all subsequent decisions,” she further noted.

Cindy also reaffirmed that the Uganda Musicians Association is alive, well, and fully committed to its mission. She also put it that they are constantly adapting to the dynamic landscape of the music industry and are always prioritizing the needs and aspirations of their members.

This message comes after the emergency of the Uganda National Musicians Federation, a newly created group led by Edrisa Musuuza also known as Eddy Kenzo which has so far attracted the subscription of bigwigs in the music industry. Some of the musicians subscribing to the Federation include Bebe Cool, Spice Diana, Sheeba Karungi, David Lutalo, and Lydia Jasmine among others.

The month-old Federation was created to unite musicians and promote their interests in Uganda by bringing together all associations in the industry under one umbrella.

The creation of UNMF was however welcomed with mixed reactions from both musicians and the public at large since there was already an existing group led by Cindy. The Eddy Kenzo-led faction was looked at as a group that would instead create more division for the already divided industry.

The inaugural leadership team of UNMF was announced on May 5, 2023, with Eddy Kenzo as the interim president, and Sheebah Karungi, and Pallaso as the first and second Vice President respectively supported by other committee members and regional representatives. The leadership was announced at a meeting that took place in Kampala where Prime Minister Robina Nabbanja was the Chief Guest.

The Uganda Musicians Association is led by the King herself Cindy as the President, Phina Mugerwa as the Secretary, Mayanja Ibrahim alias Big Eye as the Treasurer, Nalumansi Rena as the deputy treasurer, Kagoda George also known as Producer Bushington as the Public Relations Officer among others.

Some of the members and leaders of UMA are however listed among the leadership team of UNMF. A case in point is Ms. Phina Mugerwa who serves as the Secretary for UMA according to their website. The same person is the head of PR and communications according to the list of the inaugural Leadership of the Uganda National Musicians Federation.
