Noise is about a social media influencer, Mattias (Ward Kerremans) who moves his family into the father’s house. His father’s mental state is questioned, so he is placed in an assisted living facility. Mattias, his wife, Liv (Sallie Harmsenand), their baby son, soon start settling in and Mattias takes his online audience around the neighbourhood. The first place of intrigue is the nearby factory his father used to own. What starts out as a curious case of rumours to entertain an audience soon gets to Mattias’ head. Literally. Before we know it, Mattias is on the brink of insanity while his wife, brother, and even father try to help him.
Noise has two strong things going for it. Kerremans’ acting and the sound. Kerreman really takes his role seriously, going from a carefree guy to someone whose mind is at war. You feel every range of emotion with him. Then the sound really explains why the movie is titled, Noise. The sounds are eerily spooky when they need to be. Silence is used in just the right places. All without getting too loud for comfort. This is definitely not the movie to watch with your phone’s loudspeaker as the sound source.
One of the reasons the sound saves this movie is because the story itself is underwhelming. Sure, the movie is Flemish and so we have the subtitles to go by but we have watched enough movies and shows with subtitles to know that this is not the problem. The story just has no depth. So it is the sounds that keeps you entranced. If movies with subtitles are also not your jam, the movie will be a put-off. But give it a chance either way, especially if thrillers are how you roll.
