Can the music industry survive without events promoters?

Musicians and music promoters have lately been bickering over Musicians’ booking fees. The situation has seen many musicians and promoters calling each other names to the extent of Kenzo calling some promoters demoters.

In a letter dated January 19, Abbey Musinguzi, the president of the National Promoters Association said that they have stopped organizing events for crucial reasons and that their duties can only run smoothly if artists’ venue owners, PA system providers, police, and URA cut their cost by 50%.

Abitex’s letter is a clear indication that if the relationship between Musicians and promoters doesn’t get back to normal, musicians will take full control of organizing their concerts.

Music analyst James Kaliisa alias James Propa agrees that some musicians can indeed organize their events with the help of connections. However, it will always take a promoter to execute the duty. “Musicians like Eddy Kenzo are very big, they have the capital, they have the connections, they know the whole of the country so they can organize their concerts with their close promoters so they don’t need the general promoters anymore but those are few. Then there are these artists who are new and still need promoters. They don’t know Uganda, they don’t know where they can hit so they need other people on the ground to do research and book them for concerts.

People like Eddy Kenzo can call them demoters but then other artists need them so much so it depends on where you are looking at it from and how they are looking at it.

He argues that the industry cannot live without event promoters even if the ones that are currently operating should stop.

“Events promoters will always be here. The industry cannot live without events promoters even if the ones that are there stopped being promoters others will come up.”

He also explained that not all promoters agree with what Bajjo and Abitex said.

“So, even if these stopped promoting, other promoters will come up and they will promote,” he explained.
