If there is one man that has captured our imagination with his vision over the past few years, it is director David Leitch. The man made his directorial debut in a spectacular way with the film John Wick, the film went on to inspire a series of films for the character. He went on to give the cinematic world more such as Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2 and Hobbs & Shaw, a spin-off of the Fast & Furious franchise.

In Bullet Train, Leitch joins Brad Pitt stars as Ladybug, an unlucky assassin determined to do his job peacefully after one too many gigs gone off the rails. Fate, however, may have other plans, as Ladybug’s latest mission puts him on a collision course with lethal adversaries from around the globe—all with connected, yet conflicting, objectives—on the world’s fastest train. The end of the line is just the beginning in this non-stop thrill-ride through modern-day Japan.

For a stuntman turned director, he wasn’t convinced that the tightly packed interiors and cramped cars of a train would make for worthwhile action set-pieces. It was producer Kelly McCormick who really convinced him that the constraints were going to be the special sauce of the movie

A major theme of Bullet Train is luck – both good and bad. It’s an apt throughline, too, given how much of filmmaking is a continual collision between meticulous planning and improvising on the fly. Leitch flirted with chance in his own inimitable way – which led to the fortuitous birth of the movie’s cutesy Japanese mascot (and now minor TikTok star) Momomon.
