Tyler Perry uses Madea to say and do the things he wants to do but may not be able to. After watching A Madea Homecoming, I am inclined to agree with this sentiment. Madea has been with us for 11 movies, and she is as loved as she is criticised. Those who do not like the character feel that way because she seems to enable the stereotypes on the Black community in the US. The ones who love her, do so because of her no-nonsense approach to life.
While we have not seen a more toned down of the latter in recent films, original Madea is back. In A Madea Homecoming, Madea (Perry)’s family comes together for her great-grandson, Tim (Black)’s graduation. The plot is centred around Tim, with a story arc on his friend, Davi.
You do not go into these movies looking for cinematographic masterpieces; at least I don’t. It is the comedy we are looking for. A Madea Homecoming serves comedy in spades, no doubt. If you are looking to laugh, there are several opportunities, in fact, funnier than Madea movies have been in a while. The acting and choice of the cast stays true to this theme. They will make you laugh, even during heartwarming scenes. Even during the side-eye, icky ones. If you have watched BBC’s Mrs Brown’s Boys, seeing her in Madea will be interesting.
However, this comedy is laced in much more profanity, and plain ‘wrongness’ than usual. Madea is clearly more ornery in her old age, although we never know what this is. The story arc on Davi is confusing and a little unnecessary but hey, this is Madea.
