Irish Society of Uganda celebrates St Patrick’s Day

The Irish Society in Uganda Celebrated St Patrick’s Day; a holiday that celebrates Irish culture, heritage for three days starting last Thursday with Mr Kevin Colgan, the Irish Ambassador to Uganda hosting the event at his residence. During the event, the ambassador held bilateral discussions with Ugandan government representatives to underline the relationship between Uganda and Ireland.

On Saturday, a fundraising gala was held at Sheraton Hotel in support of giving back to local charities here in Uganda, and the dinner was attended by dignitaries like Irish Ambassador, Kevin Colgan, American Ambassador Natalie Brown, Joseph Rutabana, and the High Commissioner of Rwanda to Uganda as well as numerous members of the Irish Society

Guests who attended the dinner donated sizeable donations purposed for different charity benefits before they were presented with several exciting performances from an Irish Band known as the Kampala Midnight Special. The band performed Irish songs that got the dignitaries on their feet to dance to Irish dance stroked like the Ceili dance and Irish stepdance among others. The elite Ugandan acrobatic dance group is known as Hiccup Circus also had their go at the event and kept guests on tenterhooks with their acrobatics.

Come April, the Irish Society will do a call for proposals to different selected charities in the country to disburse the proceeds raised at this year’s ball cementing the good relationship between the two countries.

St Patrick’s was originally celebrated as a Christian holiday in Ireland to honour the country’s patron saint that was killed in the fifth century. It has morphed into an annual celebration of Irish culture across the world.
