Miss Tourism risks being stripped of her title for demanding car prize

It is a year since we published a story  indicating that 22-year-old Margaret Kankwazi  who was crowned 2018/2019 Miss Tourism was  forced to move in circles as she pursued her prize (piece of land) a year after the pageant had been held.

However, the same fate seems to be following reigning queen Miss Tourism Uganda, Bridget Kyeru, who has allegedly been threatened to be dethroned by Mr Allan Kanyike Bwete, the chief executive officer of Miss Tourism Uganda for asking for her car prize.

A reliable source who is also a reigning regional Miss Tourism, revealed to this reporter that Mr Kanyike who is in possession of the car that was supposed to be given to Ms Kyeru has been hesitant to surrender it.

“Kyeru has to beg in advance to use the car. Additionally, she only gets the car if she is to attend tourism related functions. Besides that, she has to fuel it by herself,” the source who asked not to be named in this story so as to speak freely explained.

The source further noted that when Kyeru demanded for full access to the car, Mr Kanyike responded with a furious WhatsApp message threatening that she had been relieved of her duties and a new queen would be named soon.

“We would like to inform the public that after a careful deliberation, the organization has decided to relieve queen Kyeru Phiona of her duties and appoint an ambassador to take over the role of Miss Tourism Uganda 2020,” partly reads a WhatsApp seen by this reporter.

In response to the Mr Kanyike’s statement Ms Kyeru demanded for her prize “Its ok ….am waiting for my car,” she wrote.

Mr Kanyike then replied saying “It’s about time that people came to compete for the crown not for the car and other prizes.”

When contacted on phone, Ms Kyeru confirmed the development but declined to divulge more details.

“Who has told you that? I won the car and it had no strings attached. I’m yet to receive it. It is a long story but I’m not sure whether I’m supposed to tell you anything,” Kyeru explained on phone.

Mr Kanyike, however, dismissed the allegations as false and referred this reporter to Mr Ivan Luggya, the project manager, Miss Tourism Uganda.

When contacted on phone, Mr Luggya said the car is meant to be handed over to Kyeru when she hands the crown over to another queen.

“She will get it when handing over. The car prize comes with terms and conditions and that car is supposed to do organization work. We also explained that to the prize sponsor, Pemba sports,” Mr Luggya explained.

According to Luggya, the idea of giving prizes to the beauty queens was done away with after they realized that they stop working after they are given prizes.

“This is a job. When you give them prizes they abscond from their duties. If you don’t work do you get paid! All they do is to attend events and slay around,” he added.

He also noted that Miss Tourism will be calling off car prizes following controversies that have always been associated with them.

“We are not giving out cars anymore,” he added.
