I started out plaiting our neighbours’ hair — Don Ash

Firsts. Ashroph Kiyinji, better known by his alias, Don Ash is a make-up artist and hairstylist in Mbale. He talks to Olivier Mukaaya about his firsts.

Who are you?
I am Ashroph Kiyinji, aka, Donash a make-up artist and hair dresser in Mbale City.

First thing you do before going to work?
I pray and check my phone for any update.

Earliest childhood memory?
When I was about nine years old, I used to plait our neighbours’  hair but the hairstyles did not last. I did not have any skills.

What was your first job?
Housekeeping when I was in my Primary Seven vacation.

Your first salary was…
Sh100,000.

What is your current job?
Make-up artist and hairdresser.

The best part of your job is…?
Working on a client because I give them my best so that by the time I am through, my work is admirable.

And the worst is…?
When I work on a bride and they do not pay claiming that they do not have money. Sometimes they say their money has been stolen. Just imagine!

Who was your first best friend?
My mother because I spent a lot of time with her and she also treated me as her best friend. Sometimes we would chat at length and many people could not believe that she was my mother.

What is your most memorable experience?
Many, for instance, when I worked on a bride who happened to be my first client. Her make-up came out better than I expected and she was excited about it.
Another memorable one was when a group of my clients posted my photos on Facebook heaping praises on me as the best make-up artist and hairstylist in Mbale. This drew more clients from within and from Kenya.

Any regrets so far…
When I retouched my mother’s hair and in the process burnt her scalp. This was because I did not follow the instructions.

What has been your most embarrassing moment?
When I lied to my ex-girlfriend that I was an expert on anything bridal but she later discovered that I did not know anything in that area.

Best advice you have ever received…
Always be creative and work hard. Above all, I should put God first in everything.

What would you be, had you not been a make-up artist and hairstylist?
A runway model if I had all the qualities, especially height.

Are you in a relationship?
No.
Your first crush was…?
Racheal when were in primary school.
