Lockdown stars: Adenalyn Muzik hit the entertainment scene this year with the hit song, Some Ka Money. The catchy rap song has resonated with many young Ugandans and with the months of lockdown, it somewhat became an earworm and theme track. Could the youngsters be running out of time to make some ka money off their break out hit? Tony Mushoborozi writes.
1. How did you guys meet to start working together?
Adrenalyn Muzik is a duo of two rappers; Ralph Munywevu, aka Lyriq and Remmy Rugwiza, aka Flow. We are childhood friends and we grew up in the same neighbourhood in Kampala. We lived around a vibrant influence of hip hop music and urban culture. We were fortunate to meet and live around legends such as The Mith and Aethan Music, who became instrumental to our love for hip hop. Music soon turned into a hobby. Our mutual passion for rap music pulled us closer to each other so much that we decided to form a musical duet and create hip hop music together.
The idea for an Adrenalyn duo goes as far back as 2010. After experimenting and recording for about seven years, we produced our debut Album in 2017 called Out Of Time. The album was released by Row Records on row.ug and managed to make the top five most played albums all through 2017 to 2018 with singles such as Straight Away and Mr Waiter.
2.How do you complement each other?
A lot of time is put into the creative process as we compose a concept for the song first. Flow is super creative when it comes to concept building while Lyriq has a good ear for beats. So our different set of skills help create a vibe. A good vibe.
I do not see us parting ways because our styles complement each other, melodically speaking. And it is easy for us to work with each other. Even if we parted ways, we would experiment with other sounds on solo projects and then we’d come back together to combine that creative knowledge to bring a bigger, better version of Adrenalyn.
3.What do you think are the biggest strengths of your duo?
We are both writers, so we compose our own lyrics. We also develop and produce our own music concepts with the balanced ability to interchange styles lyrically and musically. Lyriq is quite creative when it comes to wordplay, mixing it up with metaphors. We are both able to switch rapping styles and our vernacular is lit.
4.What are your after-lockdown plans?
After lockdown we plan to organise a listeners’ party for our EP, Good Vibes, and this will be for our core fans as appreciation for their support of Adrenalyn Muzik. Of course we have not been sleeping during lockdown, so we will be releasing more jams and more videos. Some collabos are in the works.
5.What does it feel like to have your breakout hit song during lockdown?
It is unfortunate lockdown happened so we could not have any performances at the time but we are confident in the fact that the song still has a lot of relevance in people’s everyday life, considering many people are actually looking for some ka money.
