Proud Mukiga: Gboy, real name Melvin Muhwezi, is a graduate of agricultural extension studies but because of his passion for music, he has decided to follow his heart writes Rajab Mukombozi.
Who is Gboy Revins?
My real name is Melvin Muhwezi, a tiny tall Mukiga from Kitumba, Kabale Municiplaity. I went to Muyebe Primary School, Kabale, Kabowa High School for O and A level then Makerere University. I am the second born of four children.
What inspired you to do music?
It was passion but also tracing family roots because I was told my grandfather was a guitarist. But also music legends such as Chameleone, Ragga Dee, Radio and Eddy Kenzo. I also used to love P-Square as a duo.
When did you start doing music?
I was told I started singing before I could talk well, but officially, I recorded my first studio song, Chillinga, in 2013 during my S4 vacation. It is what introduced me to the music industry. The song was recorded in Kabale at Jazz Avenue.
What kind of music do you do?
I do a fusion of Afro RnB pop and I sing in Rukiga and a little bit of English to cater for my non-Bakiga fans. I would call my style ‘urban local’. My songs are a blend of love, culture and societal humour.
How many songs have you released so far?
I have done 15 songs and most of them are a mix of Rukiga, Luganda and English. Some of the songs include Chillinga, Follow You, Ekirabo ft Fact Zamani, Yayo, Let Me Know, Niwe Wangye and Omwe Wenka.
We have noticed most of your songs are in Rukiga.
Yes, I want to make my people proud of my talent and gift as well as promote my culture. But I also want to prove that Rukiga music can rock.
What keeps you moving?
The urge for success, my friends and family.
Do you face any challenges in this career?
People think to be an artiste, you must be a smoker, use drugs or take alcohol but I do not use any drugs and I do not drink alcohol.
What are some of the things you have achieved from music?
I have learnt a lot, mingled with people from all walks of life, made a number of friends and above all music keeps my hope alive and gives me peace of mind.
Who are some of the artistes you have shared a stage with?
Tbro, Amani, Fact Zamani, Snazz Moses, Jazz, rjb, Prod Nature and away from home, I have shared a stage with B2C, spice Diana, Fille and Aganaga.
Any people you would say are behind your success?
Many, but among these is Bliss Management, my brother, boss and friend Vybs Musama, the media, DJs, business brands, fashion houses such as ELtajia and Myvazi and of course my family.
Where do you see yourself in the future?
I want to be remembered as a proud Mukiga who stood on his tiny legs, owned his home town and represented it everywhere.
I also dream of seeing more talented music stars from this region.
