Fans on social media teamed up against the former Miss Universe Malaysia 2017, Samantha James Katie and asked Miss Universe to strip her off her crown and title.
This was after Samantha James got into a heated argument with social media users who lashed out at her because of the remarks she made on her Instagram account regarding racism.
In her opinion, she says it’s a choice made by black people to be born that way and therefore they should learn a lesson from it.
“To all the black people, relax, take it as a challenge, makes you stronger. You chose to be born as a ‘coloured’ person in America for a reason, to learn a certain lesson,” she wrote on her Instagram page @Samanthakayty.
On receiving backlash from her followers and many internet users on Instagram and Twitter, the model decided to defend her posts which turned into a social media war.
“I don’t live in America, it has nothing to do with me, but to me, it seems like the whites won,” she posted.
Many people, including popular entertainment figures came out to disagree with the model’s posts.
“I usually keep a cool head when it comes to these things but reading your comments infuriated me. You have zero idea about what black people have to go through on a day to day basis,” Henry Golding, the star in a movie titled Crazy Rich Asians wrote.
British popular designer, Hayden Williams commented, “Beyond embarrassing.”
“I don’t want to show hate towards her because I don’t believe hate makes anything better. But just saying, I honestly hope our country disowns her or something. I am so sorry but this is not who we, Malaysians are,” @VaeshnaviJ tweeted.
Due to public demand, Instagram has since revoked the model’s verification badge.
Miss Universe Malaysia Organization has also distanced itself from the remarks made by the model and also revealed that Samantha James hasn’t represented the organisation since 2018.
This comes in at a time when Black Americans are rioting over racism and the brutal murder of George Floyd by a white police officer who had his knee pressed on Floyd’s neck in a video that made rounds on the internet.
