There was a time when everything came to a standstill, especially after many countries went into lockdown. Then, different organizers discovered online shows; in Uganda, you could say they are the new thing in town, there is almost a show every other week.

But away from Uganda, the last week of May is usually dedicated to celebrating Africa. Over the years, continental brands such as MTN, Stanbic Bank to pay-TV DSTV had taken on the culture of celebrating the day in style. But because of coronavirus, this too was cancelled.

However, TV lovers were not out, for instance, last Monday, Viacom whose group hosts channels BET, MTV Base, MTV, and Comedy Central produced an online concert featuring both Bebe Cool and TV presenter Douglas Lwanga. Bebe Cool may have put up one of the best performances until Diamond Platinumz showed up in his swanky home giving us a virtual tour while doing his famous Jeje.

The show had featured acts such as Nandy, Sauti Sol, Yemi Alade and Angelique

But that was just the beginning, through their Africa Magic stations, DSTV had a concert yesterday, like the Africa Day show on Monday, this too was celebrating Africa but also geared towards fundraising.

Aptly themed COVID-19 Hope for Africa, the concert featured artistes Tekno, Sarkodie, Tiwa Savage, Davido, Cabo Snoop, and Ugandans Jose Chameleone and Ykee Benda. Streaming on One Africa Global and Africa Magic Family, the show saw Chameleone tap into a version of him many Ugandans have not seen when he did an acoustic version of Jamila with the help of Myko Ouma.

Ykee Benda too was Impressive with yet another rendition of ‘Turn up da Vibe’. The week has seen many Ugandans such as Maurice Kirya, Suzan Kerunen, Eddy Kenzo, and Spice Diana among others involved in various Africa Day celebrations virtually.
