Today in history: First Miss Uganda crowned

Rosemary Salmon (pictured 2nd left) was the first Miss Uganda

Rosemary Salmon was the first Miss Uganda. Salmon, a student at Makerere University, was crowned Miss Uganda on November 6, 1967, at a function in Apollo Hotel, now Sheraton Kampala Hotel.

Salmon was crowned by 1966 Miss World, Reina Faria, who was from India. She flew from India to crown Miss Kenya before she arrived in Uganda for the Miss Uganda pageant.
Four days later, she flew to Tanzania and crowned Miss Tanzania before flying back home. Salmon is the grandmother of Sharon Salmon, a Ugandan socialite.

Salmon was also the first Miss Uganda to participate in the Miss World beauty pageant. She contested in the 1967 Miss World hosted in London, Britain.
While some say Dokolo District Woman MP Cecilia Ogwal contested in the 1967 Miss Uganda pageant, records available do not mention her as a participant.
