Nigerian singer Oxlade real name Ikuforiji Abdulrahman Olaitan currently one of the artistes to watch out for. The story of Oxlade is one of belief in oneself and talent.
The young talented singer has come a long way so far as a fledgling act in the music industry. He has managed to garner a solid fan base who religiously show him support and have helped build his career.
Born on April 22, the Lagos based singer and songwriter began his singing career in the same place other greats such as Michael Jackson, Wizkid, and even Beyoncé among others started, in church.
Despite his father being against him taking the music path, this didn’t stop him. He started singing when he was in secondary school and dropped out of Lagos State University due to music something that prompted his father to cut ties with him.
Falling out with his father nearly made him abandon his music career but last year, Oxlade first gained prominence in the mainstream when he featured on BlaqBonez’ ‘Mamiwota’, delivering a very catchy hook.
The song topped several charts and this boosted Oxlade to the limelight. He also featured alongside YBNL’s Fireboy DML on the song ‘Sing’. This was the song that caught Davido’s attention and heightened his interest in the young singer’s career.
The journey to Oxygen
On March 27, 2020 he a 6 track EP that was produced mainly by Spax the producer. One of the tracks ‘Tables Turn’ features British Nigerian artist Moelogo. Other songs on the album include ‘O2’, ‘Away’, ‘Hold On’, ‘Kokose’, and ‘Weakness’.
According to Oxlade, the album was inspired by his break up from his ex-girlfriend who left him just before he hit the stage with Wizkid at the O2 arena in London.
Oxalde’s EP reminds us of why we fell deeply in love with afrobeat music. The smoothest vocals, groovy harmonies will have you in your feelings, calling your ex, chasing your dreams, and dancing till your feet are sore. Each song off ‘Oxygen’ is masterfully put together and this EP will be one of those that you will listen to for a long time to come.
‘Away’, the first track off the EP with a video is beautifully scripted and was shot in the coastal town of Cape Coast in Ghana. The song revolves around Oxlade waiting for his lady love to join him as he whisks her away on a trip and in love with her weary parents looking on.
Who will you be going away with when the series of lockdown finally comes to an end? At the moment it is arguably one of the best EPs of 2020 on all music platforms. Oxlade is gradually becoming a household name in the industry as the likes of Melvitto, DJ Tunez, and other eminent names have reached out to him for collaborations.
