Mercy Alech cries after being crowned Miss Lira 2020

Miriam Mercy Alech was crowned Miss Lira at Miss Lira 2020 finals at Angles Royal in Lira Town over the weekend. The sixth edition of the annual event saw Alech outshine four other contestants.

The 22-year-old Alech who is a school dropout and a total orphan is a resident of Ayira parish, Barr Sub-county in Lira District.

The event that was fully packed also saw Brenda Akullo unveiled as the 1st Runner’s up, Christine Alinga as the 2nd Runner and Diana Atim as Miss Popularity.

The Chairman of Bar, Club, and Entertainment Owners Association of Uganda Mr. Rugiirwa Katatumba awarded all the five girls who contested for Miss Lira with Shs500, 000 each.

“Those of you who dropped out of school shall go back to school, we shall support you with all you need and those who have finished school will be given jobs. This is part of our contribution to supporting girl child education,” Rugiirwa said.

Alech who shaded tears while delivering her speech said top in her project will be mobilizing resources to purchase pads for school girls in the district.

“I will be launching a campaign to raise resources to purchase pads for our girls. Our girls are not at school because they don’t have pads and they have to stay away for two or three days. Our life is not normal as people see, we need to be treated equal,” says Alech.
