The singer, whose career was at its peak back in the mid-2000s, made an impressive comeback appearance on stage at last Thursday’s Comedy Store show amid rumours that he had retired to bricklaying.
Manzi Wanani and Ensi yaleta are perhaps Clever J’s biggest songs ever and they took the industry by storm back in the mid-20s. Both songs were off his 2007 album and although they got him fame for a while, they did not lay a firm foundation for progress in his career. His moment seemed to have ended as soon as the songs went off the charts.
Recently, rumours started going around that the singer had turned to bricklaying to make ends meet. And when the rumour got to Cindy, she offered Clever Jay a chance to rediscover himself at her upcoming concert.
But the opportunity seems to have come early for the singer as last Thursday he got himself a guest appearance and chance to perform at Alex Muhangi’s Comedy Store. For the short time he was on stage, Clever J proved he still has it in him and to that, he got himself a standing ovation.
A visibly excited Clever J seemed to know what had come to him and he did not mess it up, performing four songs. He got most people up on their feet singing along and recording videos.
The situation got wilder when Jose Chameleone emerged from the audience and joined him on stage. He tipped him before giving him a powerful hug.
“My brother Clever J you did an evident contribution and joyed many souls, most especially with your hit Manzi Wa Nani which was a banger! You are gifted and with your new path of serving God, may He lead a bright path for you. It was such a great performance bro. Keep going!” Chameleone wrote on his social media the following day. He added that he purposely attended the show to watch this performance as he had never seen Clever J perform.
Clever J, real name Gerald Muwonge, thanked Muhangi for the opportunity and admitted that he did not think he still had it in him but was surprised by the overwhelming support he received.
The other artiste who took everyone by surprise was Cindy who was not on the line-up but made an appearance.
“I was just passing by when I heard the cheers, so I was forced to come see what was happening,” she said before sampling her Boom Party track.
After her, Fille was next on stage and to the surprise of many, Mc Kats joined her. This was after she praised him for nurturing her talent and always looking out for her and she promised to always love him.
Fik Fameica and Afrigo Band were the other artistes who entertained the crowd while comedians Mighty Family, Optional Allan, Daniel Omara, Mariachi, Maulana and Raign, Godi Godi and Bizonto cracked ribs.
